This A level is divided into three compulsory units: Philosophy– which explores a number of different topics such as the problem of evil, religious language, body, mind and soul as well as the arguments for the existence of God. Secondly, ethics which looks at a range of ethical theories such as Utilitarianism and Natural Law. Application of those theories to business, euthanasia and sexual ethics. The final component is Developments of Christian Thought which assesses a number of different ideas within Christianity such as gender, liberation theology and life after death.
The course is assessed by three, two hour examinations at the end of Year 13: Philosophy, Ethics and Developments in Christian Thought.
Students will need and develop a range of generic and transferable skills including independent learning, especially reading around the subject. Students must be able to think critically and analytically and be able to assess a topic from a number of perspectives. A willingness to join in discussion is beneficial. Essay writing is a vital part of the course as this is how you will be eventually assessed.
