If you are person who also enjoys creative writing and producing texts for different audiences and  purposes then this is truly the course for you. The study of English Language will help you understand how people communicate and assign meaning (semantics), how they create impact with words (pragmatics) and how language relates to social factors (sociolinguistics) and power and injustice (discourse analysis).  English Language is a subject in which students gain debating skills through the dis-cussion of contemporary linguistic issues whilst also containing varied and engaging content, enabling students to develop research and problem-solving skills as well as increased creativity.

 

What is the structure of the course?

You will study a wide range of different texts from different time periods. You will be exploring how we learn to speak by   exploring child language acquisition, how individuals are represented by the language they use, how the English language has become diverse over time and in different areas and how language is used to shape meaning. There are two exams but also a non-exam assessment creative coursework element in which you investigate a personal area of linguistic interest and compile a creative writing portfolio, which is worth 20% of the entire A Level.

 

What skill/requirements are essential?

A strong and critical interest in the English Language is essential for doing well in A level English Language. It is a predominantly essay-based subject and suits students who have flourished in subjects like English Language, English Literature, R.E or History. Because the content of A level English Language is firmly embedded within cultural, socio-political and economic life, it sits well alongside and supports work in subjects like Media Studies, Criminology, English Literature,  Geography and History . Students will develop crucial skills in the following: debating, problem solving, time management, organisation, communication, creativity, attention to detail, literacy, IT, and interpersonal skills.

Where can this course lead?

A level English Language students can go on to study English Language or Linguistics at degree level. This can lead to a very broad range of professions and careers including: Writer, Digital copywriter, Editorial Assistant, Newspaper, Magazine or Online journalist, English Teacher, Adverting and marketing, Lawyer.
