The Drama and Theatre A-Level provides students with the opportunity to develop, refine and embed their skill set and to develop into highly skilled and knowledge performers with the ability to analyse the process of creating drama. Students will expand their knowledge of a wide range of practitioners and explore their creative mind through independent learning and exploration.

They will explore topics and issues, setting their own agenda and taking ownership of their work whilst developing leadership skills. The rich curriculum offers exposure to a wide breadth of styles of theatre, expanding students’ knowledge, awareness and aspirations. Students have the opportunity to develop their discipline, confidence and ability to accept criticism; all imperative skills to possess in any chosen career. Students who study this course will enhance their skills in creative thinking, teamwork, analysis, problem solving and will develop in confidence. Due to the growth in the communication technology industry, the ability to be able to articulate and present your ideas with confidence has become more important than ever. The Drama and Theatre course allows students the opportunity to express themselves within a creative setting whilst developing crucial attributes that will allow them to flourish in the wider world.

What is the structure of the course?

The A-Level course requires students to take a practical and academic exploration of Drama and Theatre. Students are      expected to take part in practical projects, workshops and performances whilst applying a range of practitioners. Alongside the practical elements of the course, students produce creative logs and write academically reasoned essays on current theatre practice. There are 4 components to the course. In Components One and Two you will rehearse and explore texts and perform pieces, both script based and devised, to an external examiner and audience. For components three and four you will undertake two written examinations which will focus on three different plays and one live performance. Over the two year course you will practically explore these texts, analysing themes and developing knowledge and understanding of how extracts can be rehearsed, developed and interpreted in performance.

What skill/requirements are essential?

A passion for the arts and performing is essential for students who wish to undertake the A-Level. Students must be      committed, willing and prepared to experiment with ideas in a workshop environment with energy, enthusiasm and focus. The ability to work as part of a team is essential. There are ample opportunities to practically apply your skills as a performer, but the course also includes many written elements. Assessment is 40% practical and 60% written. This subject would suit students who are interested in studying subjects such as English Literature, Media, Psychology, Art and Photography.
